The development of critical reading skills is an ongoing process that extends beyond the confines of school. All Bowling Green School students entering grades 4 through 12 are required to read an assigned book during the summer.
Summer reading must be completed by the first day of the 2024-2025 school year. An examination (with objective and/or essay items) on the book will be administered during the first week of school in each English class. Following this assessment, teachers will integrate the required summer reading texts into lessons during the first 9-weeks. Classroom instruction will require students to use their summer reading texts for reference and analysis.
Vocabulary lists to accompany the 4th - 8th grade reading assignments can be accessed in the Download Section of this page. Reviewing the list before reading and referring to the list while reading will help students comprehend and build vocabulary. Though students will not be required to memorize the word meanings, students should be able to read and understand the words when used in context on the summer reading examination and throughout the first 9-weeks.
